A Message from the Vocation’s Director
As Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Newark, I would like to welcome you
to our Vocations website, www.newpriestNJ.org The discernment of a person's
vocation, his specific call from the Lord, is perhaps the most important work a young
person can be about. It requires an open heart, one rooted in prayer, silence, and a
desire to do what God wills. It is not about asking the question 'What do I want to do
with my life?' Rather, it is about asking a better question: 'What does Christ want me
to do with my life?'
To lay down your life in service to Christ and His Church is a beautiful act of generosity and faith, but
it is one that requires complete trust. The thought of being called to priesthood might bring with it
some confusion and perhaps even fear. But it is ultimately an act of faith in the God who loves us and
calls us to live for Him. Christ uses human instruments, often weak and imperfect, to bring His love
into the world. The Church needs many selfless young men to give their lives to God so that the Good
News can be preached, the sick can be comforted, and the hungry can be nourished with the Bread
of Life.
If you found your way to this website, then perhaps the Lord is calling you to consider your own
vocation. I invite you also to consider the reflections and resources you will discover here. I ask you to
recommit yourself to prayer and silence, to meeting Christ in the sacraments, most especially in the
Eucharist. Try to attend Mass as often as possible, try to find opportunities to attend Eucharistic
adoration, find a good spiritual director (a priest you trust who can guide you and help you to hear the
Lord's voice.) I also invite you to contact our Vocations Office if you have any questions and to learn
more about the discernment opportunities provided by the Archdiocese. These include a Discernment
Support Group and Discernment retreats. I also ask you to pray each day the special Prayer for
Vocations of Archbishop Myers. It is quite simple yet profound, and it is especially helpful for young
people to seek to know God's will in their lives: "Lord, help me to want to be what you want me to be."
This prayer is an invitation for the Lord to enter your heart and mind. It is a beautiful prayer of
surrender to the God who made you, loves you, and has a great plan for your life.
And do not be afraid! When we give our lives to Christ, he takes nothing beautiful from us, but only
gives us more of that which makes life meaningful, now and in the future. May our good God bless
you as you seek His will for your life. Remember, only in Him do our hearts find true peace. I look
forward to hearing from you if you would ever like to speak or meet in person!
In Jesus and Mary,
Fr. John Gabriel
